Am in love with my best friend

Am in love with my best friend

Zel and I had been friends for the past five years. We became friends through a mutual friend. Zel was a nice guy — tall, handsome, and fair in complexion. He was every girl’s dream man.

We shared the same ideas and beliefs, so we moved together like brother and sister.

As fate would have it, I got the opportunity to travel outside the country to start a new life. Even while abroad, Zel and I stayed in touch. We spoke almost every day, sharing our struggles, dreams, and little moments that made life easier.

Somewhere along the line, I developed feelings for him. Deep feelings. But from the way things looked, I wasn’t sure he felt the same way. A part of me wanted to tell him how I truly felt, but another part was terrified of being rejected and ruining the beautiful friendship we already had.

So, I kept quiet and admired him from a distance.

Months passed, and life abroad became overwhelming. There were days I felt lonely and frustrated, but Zel never failed to check up on me. He would stay on calls with me late into the night just to make sure I was okay. Sometimes he would even skip outings with his friends just to keep me company online.

One evening after a particularly stressful day, I broke down on the phone while talking to him. I cried uncontrollably, telling him how tired and lonely I felt. Zel stayed silent for a moment before softly saying, “I wish I was there with you.”

My heart skipped.

That night, after we ended the call, I couldn’t sleep. His words kept replaying in my head. Maybe I was overthinking it, but for the first time, I felt there was a possibility he cared about me too.

A few weeks later, I travel back to the country for the holidays.

A day after my arrival I heard a knock on my door that evening.

When I opened it, I froze.

Standing right in front of me was Zel,with the biggest smile on his face.

“I couldn’t let you spend your holidays alone,” he said softly.

I was speechless. Tears filled my eyes immediately. Before I could say anything, he pulled me into a warm hug.

That evening changed everything between us. We talked for hours, laughed, cooked together, and for the first time, the tension between us was impossible to ignore.

As we sat quietly on the balcony later that night, Zel held my hand gently and said, “I’ve wanted to tell you this for a long time, but I was scared of losing our friendship.”

I looked at him nervously.

He smiled and continued, “I’m in love with you.”

At that moment, every fear, every doubt, and every hidden feeling disappeared.

Sometimes, the best love stories begin with friendship.
