Okay, I need to tell you this story because I have been laughing at myself about it for three years and I think you deserve to laugh too. my husband Marcus and I had been going through a rough patch. Nothing catastrophic just the grey, grinding kind of disconnection that creeps in after years and kids and mortgages and never quite enough sleep. I had read an article titled "Reignite the Spark: 7 Date Night Ideas" and decided that what our marriage needed was a romantic home cooked dinner. Now. I want to be clear. I cannot cook. I have never been able to cook. On our second date I told Marcus I could make pasta and served him spaghetti with ketchup. He married me anyway, which should tell you something about that man. But love makes you ambitious. I found a recipe for beef bourguignon. I don't know why I chose beef bourguignon. I think I was seduced by the French name. I bought ingredients I couldn't pronounce. I lit candles. I put on a playlist called "Romantic French Evening." I sent Marcus to take the kids to his mother's.
Forty minutes later, I had, Burned the onions black. Added the wine to the wrong pan. Somehow set a tea towel on fire 😂😂😂😂. Filled the kitchen with smoke so thick the alarm woke the neighbour's dog. The fire brigade arrived three of them, very kind, very professional just as Marcus pulled back into the driveway. He stood at the gate. Looked at the fire engine. Looked at me, standing on the front lawn in my nice dress holding a burned tea towel. Looked at the three firemen inside his kitchen."Babe," he said slowly. "What is beef bourguignon?" I burst out laughing. He burst out laughing. We stood on the front lawn crying with laughter while the firemen aired out our kitchen. We had fish and chips on the sofa that night, in our pyjamas, watching something terrible on Netflix. Best date night in years.
Some sparks don't need a recipe. Sometimes you just need to burn the tea towel and remember why you chose each other.
